THE BLOG

October 5, 2017

And you thought the adventure was over... long overdue is the video update from Denali with my Aunt Kay. Included is Kay's professional review of the appointments in the Out West Bus including a rating of the cutlery and flatware used to serve our first meal. And vodka. Lots of vodka. I picked Kay up at the Anchorage Airport on my way north from Seward after paddleboarding. As you recall from the blog, we headed to Eklutna Lak...

Hands down, the best moment of the trip was paddleboarding with icebergs. Here's the VLOG from Anchorage and Seward Alaska:

Today is the last day. It’s hard to believe, and yet, in some ways, I’m ready to be home. I didn’t sleep very well last night. The thunderstorms had Pepper anxious and she was pacing in the bus. And I was laying in bed thinking about the trip, thinking about being home, and wondering what it would feel like to back.

After breakfast we headed out. Our detour for the campsite had taken us south or Rawlins to Saratoga and while...

Leaving Jackson today was bittersweet, but we woke up to rain and cloudy skies that made it easier to move on. We packed up the bus and hit the road. We’re planning to drive to Rawlins, Wyoming today. It’s about halfway to Denver from Jackson. While you can drive in a car from Jackson to Denver in about 8 hours, it would take about 10 in the bus. So we’re going to split it into two days.

We head out and travel north at first...

As the previous routine, we woke up early and headed to the Jenny Lake parking lot to ensure we could park the bus. I’m glad we did! The line to get into Grand Teton National Park was about 6 cars deep and grew as we were waiting. We pulled into the parking lot and secured the last RV parking spot. We walked Pepper and then packed some day packs for ourselves with snacks and water.

We didn’t really have a plan, but figured we...

Today is the day! I’m picking up a VIP passenger, who also happens to be my mom! She’s flying in and riding with me for the rest of the trip back to Denver. She lands at 12:45, so I have a leisurely morning.

After breakfast and feeding Pepper we head out to take some photos of the Tetons. It looks a lot less smokey today and I’m hoping to snap a couple of good photos. We drive up the main road (highway 191) and find the Glaci...

Based on the advice of the park rangers I got up early, but not too early, to hit a couple of spots on the way into Yellowstone, but still get parking at Old Faithful. As it turned out, it was a chilly morning which was perfect for seeing the hot springs, geysers, and other features of Yellowstone.

I stopped at a couple of places and took photos of the various pools and stopped at the Fountain Paint Pot, Midway Geyser basin,...

Pepper woke me up like clockwork. I fed her, showered and then we hit the road. It was a pretty uneventful drive into Butte and then on to Bozeman. This is another one of those “reseting the characters for the next chapter” type days. Not much to see along the way into Bozeman. And I wasn’t able to connect with the other bus folks, so that was a bit of a bummer.

Past Bozeman I stopped for Diesel (the bus clearly has a drinkin...

The drive from Glacier to Missoula passes through some nice rolling farmland before reaching flathead lake which is a HUGE lake in the middle of very arid rolling hills. It was very pretty, but like Glacier, the smoke was clouding the view. But I passed through a ton of cherry orchards that all had stands. I kept watching for one that I could see far enough in advance and that had a big enough pull out for the bus, but never f...

I woke up around 7am to head into the park. I’m finding that in order to get parking for the bus, I need to arrive early and park for the day. Given the crowds I saw at Many Glacier, I’m assuming this part of the park will be even worse. Unfortunately, it turns out that I’m right.

I pulled into the visitors center parking lot around 8 and luckily there is plenty of RV parking. I park the bus, make coffee and breakfast and tak...
